How to create a sustainable Easter centerpiece: A step-by-step guide from the Institute of Flowers

Create a stunning, eco-friendly Easter centerpiece using natural materials and seasonal flowers. This step-by-step guide, created by Institute of Flowers’ member Heather Condron from Flowerpop.ie, will detail how to craft a moss-covered willow base adorned with fresh flowers, perfect for your table setting.

Materials you will need:

• Willow wreath base
• Fresh moss
• Pen or pencil (for making holes)
• Seasonal flowers from your garden (e.g. daffodils, narcissus, hellebores)
• Additional flowers (e.g. poppies, ranunculus, sea spray, limonium)
• A hurricane candle and holder (optional)
• Large bowl (if making the arrangement to last several days) 

Step-by-step instructions:

Step 1: Prepare the willow base 

Start with a sturdy willow wreath as your base. This provides a natural and biodegradable foundation for your arrangement. 

Step 2: Cover with moss 

Take fresh moss and wrap it around the willow base, ensuring an even layer. The moss not only adds texture but also helps retain moisture for the flowers. 

Step 3: Create small holes for flowers 

Using a pen or pencil, gently create small holes in the moss-covered base. These holes will act as pockets to hold your flowers securely in place. 

Step 4: Insert garden flowers 

Choose flowers from your garden, such as daffodils, narcissus, and hellebores. Insert their stems into the pre-made holes, spacing them evenly around the wreath. 

Step 5: Add additional flowers 

Enhance the design by incorporating additional blooms like poppies, ranunculus, sea spray, and limonium. These flowers add colour, texture, and depth to your arrangement. 

Step 6: Hydrate the flowers 

If the centerpiece is for a one-day event, the moss will provide sufficient moisture. For longer-lasting arrangements, place the entire wreath in a large bowl filled with water. This ensures the flowers stay hydrated for a few days. 

Step 7: Add the candle (optional) 

For an elegant touch, place a hurricane candle in the center of the wreath. This creates a warm and inviting glow, making it a perfect Easter table centerpiece. 

Care tips: 

• Keep the arrangement in a cool area to prolong its freshness.
• Mist the moss lightly with water daily if you want to maintain hydration.
• Replace any wilted flowers with fresh ones to extend the life of your centerpiece.
